Things to do before moving in and out

Expat Moving Holland

Moving in day

  • Use a reputable removal firm – seek recommendations and check they are insured.
  • Try to avoid moving on a Friday – this is usually the busiest day of the week.
  • Pack your belongings yourself – also ensures they are packed safely in transit.
  • Use comparison websites to get the best deal with your utility providers. Make sure you give them the actual meter readings the day you move in.
  • Take out a contents Insurance policy to protect your possessions from damage or theft.
  • Set up your standing order in good time in order to make your rent payments on time.  Delay in payments causes a bad feeling between landlord and tenant.

Moving out day

Before you move out there are lots of things to do. You will normally follow the same procedure for moving in but be informing utility companies for example, that you are leaving and give final meter readings etc.

Here is our quick checklist:

  • Allow enough time to pack up your belongings, this can be the most stressful thing of moving out.
  • If you require a large rubbish collection please make an appointment with your local Gemeente to arrange it  – this will need to be made at least a couple of weeks in advance.
  • Please put furnished properties back in the manner that they were handed to you in.
  • Thoroughly clean the property! Very important in terms of getting your deposit back – a landlord may deduct cleaning/damage costs.
  • Repair any damage e.g. fill any picture hook holes and paint over.
  • If there is a garden, make sure it has been left clean and tidy e.g. no rubbish or cigarette buts on the floor.
  • Always attend the check-out.  This is your time to ensure the inventory is correct and any damage that had already been noted when checking in will be taken into account.  Back up your check out by supplying original photos at check-in. Sign and date the inventory and send it to the landlord and/or agent.
  • Support your cleaning costs and replacement of any damaged items with receipts.
