A place to rent

Choose your property carefully, think about location, amenities and convenience.
For example if you are living alone, you may want to think about returning to the property late at night by yourself. Whether you want to be on the ground floor or whether you would like to have a designated parking space or be able to apply for a parking permit.
Do you need furnished or unfurnished accommodation? Semi-furnished can also be possible. Rent prices can vary due to the property being furnished or unfurnished but generally it does not make too much difference. Please note that with furnished properties a higher deposit can sometimes be required and you are responsible for any damage caused to the furniture during your tenancy agreement – general wear and tear is of course taken into account.
Other key questions to ask yourself:
- What sort of facilities do you need in your new home e.g. is a purpose built shower essential or can you make do with a shower attachment in the bath?
- What facilities are there for washing and drying your clothes?
- Is there a cooker, dishwasher, gas/electric hob?
- Would you like an outside space e.g. balcony or garden?
- How do you feel about sharing facilties – this could also mean with your landlord if he also lives in the property?
- Would you qualify for a rental permit? If not, all independent rentals with a basic rent of under approx €550 are out of the question.
Where should I look
Finding a property to rent can seem like a big task. With so many things to take into account it can feel overwhelming. For some people, morever students, it can be easier if you know someone who is looking for a tenant - recommendation is usually a solid way forward in this case but it is not without it’s drawbacks. Always ensure that there is a proper tenancy agreement in place and make sure you get lots of feedback from other tenants in the building. Don’t be scared to ask questions.
If you qualify for ‘social housing’, have sufficient points and are on the waiting list it can be harder to find a good property using this criteria. This is where RandstadWonen comes in.
